For almost 70 years the French Colony of Indochina existed in Southeast Asia. The Flat Friends have only ever known Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam on the map, but the generations before them have seen the borders in this part of the world shift, and the names change—even as the native people remained the same. The people of Vietnam, for instance, wanted to be united as one nation, free to choose their path to the future. They officially reunited in 1976, and by 1980, they were finally able to start building a peaceful future under the single yellow star of their flag.

Flat Hal and Flat Halena are discovering Vietnam for the first time! Our ship is docking in container/ cargo ports, with lots of fishing boats nearby, then excursions take passengers to points of interest. From our first stop, Phước An, it was a two hour bus ride to Ho Chi Minh City, where passengers could visit the city center—Saigon. After 4 hours of touring, and a big lunch, it was another two hours in the bus back. The Flat Friends decided to save their energy for an upcoming port.
