Flat Halena was a little disappointed to discover when we arrived at Benoa, Bali, that we were not visiting the mythical Bali Ha’i. Instead, we arrived at a very real place, full of its own culture and wonders. Even if it didn’t inspire James Michener, it did us!
Flat Hal wore himself out on Komodo Island yesterday. While Flat Halena was trying to wrap her head around Bali being different from the island Bali Ha’i in South Pacific, we decided to have a relaxing day aboard ship. That doesn’t mean we didn’t see any sights!
Birds were fishing across the channel from us in the mud flats that were created when the tide went out. Little Pied Cormorant was the only new-to-us bird we photographed. We saw Great Egrets, and Little Egrets, and some really fast little birds were playing in the air currents around the ship. We think they might have been Swifts, in which case they are well named—they were swift!
Look closely for the Little Pied Cormorant, we almost missed him!
The Flat Friends really enjoy seeing the buildings in different countries. It feels like this is one of the places where the culture and personality of a place are visible.
At the port of Benoa the architects made a point of including traditional looking structures that remind their people of the heart of the village. This port doesn’t just function, it welcomes.
The ship staying in port overnight means we have another chance to go ashore tomorrow!
