Scenic Sailing in Antarctica

Overnight our ship seemed to aimlessly meander through an area we had sailed during the day. In reality this was part of the “safety first” motto aboard.

The ship returned to water it had “scouted” during the day. The bridge officers knew of any hazards, how much ice was present in the water, and made the job of “keeping watch” easier.

Yesterday

It also meant we could return to a LARGE iceberg the Captain saw yesterday. He had time to plan, and think, and was able to safely bring our ship close to an iceberg almost as tall as our vessel!!

Today

Next, we sailed by the Melchior Base. That’s Argentina’s Science Base in Antarctica. 30 different countries operate Science Research Bases in Antarctica! As many as 56 nations are involved, is ours? What kind of things do you think they discover on the continent with no native human population??

The Flat Friends were still photographing Melchior Base when the Captain announced Sea Lions to Port!

Perfect, we were already on the port side.

He said they were on the rocks so we zoomed in our camera lenses and started looking.

125x zoom really comes in handy when you are sailing by animals.

The Flat Friends wondered if some of the sea lions (fur seals?) were taking a nap in the sun — and pretending to be rocks!
