Alter do Chão is famous for its beautiful river beaches and relatively clear waters, offering a chance to swim in the Amazon. Though, to be clear, people are actually swimming in the water of the Tapajos River before it merges with the muddier Amazon River, but for those who want to say they swam in the Amazon this just might be the place for them. With a population of around 6,000 people it’s hard to say whether this is a village or a town, but it clearly has figured out how to get people a little extra excited about their white sand beaches.
