Glacier Alley, Beagle Channel

This channel is named for the HMS Beagle. A ship that played an important role in exploration of the area.It is also the ship Charles Darwin traveled on.

Imagine being on the HMS Beagle. The year is 1826, give or take… essentially 200 years ago. You do not have GPS, email, or cell phones. The ship has rudimentary (basic) maps of the region, but the crew is here to chart the area… draw a detailed map of the coast, and very importantly chart how deep the water is so ships know if they can actually sail the area, or will get stuck (or worse) on something in the water beneath them.

Around every corner is a new wonder, whether it is waterfalls, a glacier seeming to appear out of the mist, or simply birds we haven’t seen before. (Charles Darwin wrote, among other things, about the animals he saw here.)

Hanging Glacier vs. Valley Glacier

In glacier bay, Alaska, I have seen glaciers, I did not realize until Flat Hal and Flat Stanley were looking up information about glacier alley, Chile, that some glaciers hang off of rocks, and are called hanging glaciers while others flow down a valley, or into the ocean which gets them the name tidewater glaciers — a type of valley glacier.

Amalia glacier, which we saw two days ago, is a tidewater glacier.
