Flat Hal had heard buildings in Asia look different than at home, but seeing them was really special. Sloping roofs arc up to points, with fancy decorations, allowing the temple buildings to stand apart from the modern office buildings around them.

Flat Halena wandered around, discovering the flowers that grow on the grounds, and enjoying the cut flowers left as offerings by previous visitors.

Interesting square flags were flying at the Buddhist sites we visited. They have bands of color that represent the five elements, and sometimes a written character in the center related to the site we were visiting.

These are just a few of the flowers we saw on our day in Ha Long.

Some were familiar—from our travels, and from home!

Others were new to us.

Do you recognize any of these flowers?

By the end of our tour, we had spent several hours crisscrossing the city of Ha Long. This traffic circle was an incredible blend of urban (city) art and function.

Our visit to see the Wooden Sticks was intriguing. Sticking up from the riverbed are large wooden poles General Trần Hưng Đạo commanded be placed over 800 years ago to damage invaders’ boats—at high tide the sticks are hidden from view! (Mongolians were the threat in his time.)

Vietnam (officially the country’s name is Socialist Republic of Vietnam, or in Vietnamese: Cộng hòa Xã hội chủ nghĩa Việt Nam) was the first time the Flat Friends visited a country governed by the Communist Party. The yellow Hammer and Sickle on a red background is the flag of the communist party. It is designed to represent the industrial workers uniting with the farmers.

Many people get confused seeing this flag along the streets of Vietnam. They think this is the flag of the old Soviet Union (or USSR), but it actually represents the Communist Party
