The word billabong has its roots in an aboriginal word, with many believing the original term bilabaŋ means “a watercourse that runs only after rain”, another way of saying floodwaters. A lush, green area forms, with fresh water for animals to drink, and trees for birds to nest in.

The Flat Friends’ big hope in choosing to go to Billabong Sanctuary was that we would get to see some native and uniquely Australian animals.

Grey Kangaroo

We had heard of Koalas and Kangaroos, but Tree Kangaroos and Red-Legged Pademelons were totally new to us!

Goodfellow’s Tree Kangaroo

On our return to the ship, friends asked if the excursion was everything we hoped for— perhaps because we went into it simply wanting to see new things, and embrace the wonder of discovery, it was everything we could have hoped for and more.

Red-Legged Pademelon

Were any of these animals new discoveries for you too?
