Keep this checklist handy as you look back through the journal! Can you identify all the birds that Flat Hal and Flat Halena spotted on their New Zealand adventure?
[ ] Sparrow – An “immigrant” bird that originally came all the way from Europe!
[ ] Blackbird – Another European traveler often seen enjoying the sunshine in Auckland’s parks.
[ ] Pacific Black Duck – Look for these swimming in the waterways near the vintage railway.
[ ] Mallard – A very common duck that likes to hang out with its Pacific Black Duck cousins.
[ ] Australasian Swamphen (Pūkeko) – These birds have a special Māori name and are famous for their bright colors and long legs.
[ ] Variable Oystercatcher – A special “endemic” bird, which means it is native to New Zealand and found nowhere else on Earth!
