Savusavu, Fiji — even on rainy and foggy days there are new discoveries to be made

Flat Stanley and Flat Hal started their day in Savusavu, Fiji before the ship arrived by seeing the sunrise— but that glimpse of a rainbow above Flat Hal was a warning of rain to come, not just a celebration of the rain that had already fallen.

Since the flat fellas don’t do well in water (we really need to work on Flat Hal being more water tolerant for future adventures!) today’s discovery was different than in previous ports.

Cassava chips!  A tasty local snack!

According to Gemini AI (from Google) Fijian cassava chips are a popular snack in Fiji! They’re kind of like potato chips, but they’re made from cassava instead of potatoes.

Here’s what makes them special:

  • Cassava: Cassava is a root vegetable that grows underground, kind of like a carrot. It’s a staple food in Fiji and many other tropical countries.
  • Crispy and crunchy: Fijian cassava chips are sliced thinly and then fried until they’re super crispy and crunchy. They make a satisfying crunch when you bite into them!
  • Homemade chips: Some people in Fiji make their own cassava chips at home by slicing cassava, frying it, and adding their own spices.

Have you ever had a Cassava chip?  We had lightly salted ones that had just been fried and they were really tasty… the comparison to potato chips is a good one!
