Flat Hal and Flat Halena wanted the next book they read to feel like it took place on one of the islands we visited.
Nim’s Island has something very special in common with Pitcairn Island— Nim’s family calls it home, but they don’t have lots of neighbors. They aren’t part of a big community like Papeete.
Instead this is their island home, and once a year a supply ship comes with the things they don’t grow or make for themselves. There’s also a turtle, which reminded us a lot of the one the people from Pitcairn showed us a picture of and said was a friend.
Nim’s Island was just the book we wanted! Island life jumps from the pages, the friendships are fun, and while Nim can do a lot, she’s strong enough to know when she needs help, and to ask for it! She’s a great hero for this story.
