Salvador de Bahia, Brazil — the country’s oldest port

Being the oldest port in the country implies several things. Just one of them is that this city has a long, and complex history. America is not the only country that traded with Africa centuries ago, when sailing ships traveled between the continents.

Salvador de Bahia is not only aware of its history, but talks about it, educates visitors about it, and seems to understand that as a city it just might be the ‘most African place in Brazil.’

It was interesting to walk around a city with not just a new town and an old town, but upper and lower towns because of a large hill — with an elevator that can be used to go between parts of town.

The old town appeared to have a lot of beautiful churches and architecture , setting it apart from the more modern new town.

Salvador de Bahia, Brazil

Another big city in Brazil that the flat fellas explored just a small portion of. 2.4 million people call Salvador home, when the entire metropolitan area is included the numbers rises to around four million. It is no wonder the city has a very modern skyline full of high rises to accommodate its residents… but peeking out among these new buildings are beautiful pieces of history.
