Montevideo, Uruguay

The Flat Fellas are realizing that Flat Hal at least does quite a few things when traveling that he doesn’t normally do at home. He doesn’t normally walk over 5 miles in the course of a few hours. Does normally take pictures of (or even notice) every interesting building he passes. And he doesn’t normally take hundreds of pictures of birds in a week, much less seem to see a bird he’s never seen before at least once every three or four days.

Is there something you do when you go away from home that you don’t do at home??

República Oriental del Uruguay
Oriental Republic of Uruguay

The United States of America is often shortened to “United States” or an abbreviation of USA or U.S., with the abbreviations being so common they are routinely used in conversation. Perhaps that is why it was while touring the Government House Museum in Montevideo that Flat Hal discovered the word Oriental in the name of Uruguay, and pointed it out to Flat Stanley.

With a little help from Google’s Gemini AI the flat fellas learned something really interesting, ready to share in the discovery with them?

The word “Oriental” in Spanish (and many other European languages) comes from the Latin word “oriens.”

Oriens literally means “rising,” and it specifically refers to the rising of the sun. Therefore, it was used to denote the east.

From “oriens,” the adjective “orientalis” was derived, meaning “of the east” or “eastern.”

This Latin word “orientalis” evolved into the Spanish word “oriental,” which means eastern.

What else does this remind you of?

During the trip Flat Hal and Flat Stanley have been using maps to orient themselves… when looking at a map, in order to know where you are and where you are going it helps to know what direction you are facing, for instance, what direction the sun rises in.
