East Falkland Island… An Island Without Trees?

#flatstanley #flathal #falklandislands

Our guide drove us around for almost half an hour. During that time he explained the Falkland Islands is an interesting place to live in part because they have no native trees. There are plants growing low to the ground for animals to graze on. And a berry that is endemic (remember what that word means?) to the Falkland Islands, the Diddle Dee Berry. But not trees.

Additionally, the islands have stone flows. Think of a river. Instead of water babbling over stones, carving a path between the banks on either side, it is jagged stone that fills the area between the banks. These quartzite stone flows were caused by the previous Ice Age!
