The Chimú and Chan Chan

Flat Hal and Flat Stanley again opted to let others do the walking for them, and given not just the size of Chan Chan, but the labyrinth style layout, that was probably a good idea. Chan Chan is referred to as the Home of the Elite, the King and Queen of the Chimú, but most of the area we toured felt more like a temple.

We were close enough to the ocean the sound of the water could be heard at one point, and many of the walls were decorated with depictions that included the sea, and the fish, and an understanding of the tides.

There is no roof, or ceilings now, but imagine this huge structure with wood latticework over the open spaces, the gaps between the wood allowing the ocean breeze to come in and cool the place off.

Thick walls, with some stone in the foundation, then built with the adobe bricks of the Moche, crosshatched in an “earthquake proof” manner.
