Flat Hal and Flat Stanley had a fantastic last day of scenic cruising in Antarctica. When we first stepped outside to take photos it was snowing— leading to interesting attempts to get the camera to focus on the white landscape and animals with a lot of white in them. The sun came out, and the photo opportunities just got better and better.

So many “dots” on the rocky surface — each one is a penguin? Today we saw chinstrap penguins.

Ernest Shackleton Explored Antarctica

Take a moment to think about life on a sailing boat 100 years ago. There were no satellites and GPS systems to guide you. No internet to contact home, or other vessels in the area. Signals between ships were sent using lights and flags. The endurance had a radio receiver, but no transmitter. When things went wrong members of his crew sailed lifeboats to this rocky island, turned them upside down to use them as shelter, and waited four months, in the freezing and near freezing temperatures, for their Captain to find aid and bring it back to them.
The bust honors that rescue.

How would you have kept up you confidence in your leader for those four months? What would have helped you believe rescue would come, you just had to survive?
