Christo de la Concordia de Arica – Christ of Peace (or Harmony) of Arica, Chile

If you have ever seen a movie with scenes in the city of Rio de Janeiro then you have probably seen the statue known as Christ the Redeemer. It is huge, and stands atop a mountain overlooking Rio. Movies use something called an “establishing shot” a brief image to let you know where the action is taking place. A picture of your favorite characters home before scenes in their home for instance. The Christ the Redeemer statue is instantly associated with Rio. Show it on the hill above the city, and most adults do not even need the word Rio on the screen to know where they are.

Flat Hal and Flat Stanley are on their first joint venture to South America. Seeing a statue similar to Christ the Redeemer in Chile was exciting… reminiscent of movies they had seen. The Rio Statue is in the opening of the movie “Fast 5” for instance. The Arica statue isn’t as big, but it stands atop a hill by the port, facing out to see — looking like it is welcoming travelers like us to come and visit.

In one of the pictures you can see the pier we docked at on the right, and an arrow point at the statue up on the hill. We took the picture as we sailed out towards our next destination.

If you could design a statue to welcome travelers to your hometown what would it look like?
