The Flat Fellas made the most of our time in Reykjavik, walking around the city, visiting local grocery stores and small book shops and enjoying the beautiful weather. The sun was out most of the time we were in town, with the temperature near 50 degrees Fahrenheit… particularly nice for a May Day in Iceland.
At the port we watched fog moving in and out, as our Captain and bridge crew monitored the weather between Iceland and our next port of call, in Greenland.
Urban Art Or Icelandic Cairns?
Sometimes Flat Hal and Flat Stanley are not quite sure what they are seeing as they travel. These stacked stones near Harpa Concert Hall in Reykjavik are an example.
They looked a lot like the Apachetas we learned about at Paracas National Reserve in Peru. Had they been out in a field, or rural area we would be confident in thinking we had seen Icelandic cairns (vörður), stacks of stones primarily built as navigational markers to guide people across the landscape, especially in areas lacking clear trails or prone to fog. However, these were next to where the buses dropped us off, in a narrow space between a busy street and the sea.
