Château de Brest, a castle in Brest, France, is the oldest monument in the town. At the mouth of the river Penfeld the site has over 1700 years of history!

If we visit the earliest towns or colonial sites in The United States or Canada they have closer to 500 years of history! (Quebec was founded in 1608, around the same time the Virginia Company of 1606 was establishing Jamestown.)

Brittany is a part of France that has had centuries of migrants from Britain, specifically the Celtic speaking areas. The word Britain did not actually contribute to the name of Brittany, but people from the British Isles did. They were known as the Brythonic people.

Fellow passengers were told on their tour that people from Wales comment on being able to understand a surprising amount of the local dialect, Breton, which has Common Celtic roots.
