Europa Point Lighthouse, Gibraltar

Our Cruise Ship is visible in this shot!

On the way to Europa Point Lighthouse we rounded a corner and a giant, manmade waterfall emerged from the rock of Gibraltar! Flat Hal and Flat Stanley were delighted with the sight their guide had warned them to watch for.

This water is the waste water (brine) discharged from a desalination plant that some clever engineers decided to turn into something beautiful.

On a clear day, from Europa Point, Morocco/Africa can be seen, and from atop the rock of Gibraltar you can look out over Spain/Europe!

Where Is Gibraltar?

Gibraltar is a little place. Around three square miles! Flat Hal and Flat Stanley’s hometowns are a LOT bigger than that, what about yours? All of Gibraltar has less than 35,000 people… but it has its own currency. The Gibraltar Pound Sterling. Similar to the British Pound, but only used in Gibraltar.

Gibraltar is on the end of the Iberian Peninsula. Part of Europe, it is approximately 12 miles across the straits of Gibraltar to Morocco, which is in Africa!

Our ship sailed from the Atlantic, into the Bay of Gibraltar for our time in port there. We sailed through the straits of Gibraltar into the Alboran Sea. The Alboran Sea felt a bit like the front hall, or entranceway to the Mediterranean Sea, a bigger, more famous sea with a lot of countries on it.

On this map you can see some of our our previous ports. Agadir, and Casablanca in Morocco are both visible.

The blue dot is where we were on our sea day as the flat fellas sat down to make this journal entry. Can you guess what port might be next?
