The Flat Fellas Visit Puerto Montt, Chile

Flat Stanley joined Flat Hal for a leisurely walk on shore after a short tender ride over from the cruise ship. We talked in our previous journal about tenders. When the boat anchors a short way from land, some of the lifeboats are used to carry passengers to land.

We have quite a few tender ports on this cruise. Part of that is because some of the ports we are going to have shallow water, others are small towns that do not have a pier big enough for our ship.

More from our walk in Puerto Montt

Flat Hal and Flat Stanley picked up a map from the tourist information booth in the terminal and asked “where are we most likely to see seals or sea lions?”

Great Egret

Advised that sometimes scraps from the fish market are tossed into the water, and the animals come for the “free food” we set off in that direction with our cellphone cameras, and not much of a plan.

Brown Hooded Gull

If we had known how many birds and such we would see we would have brought the big camera with the powerful optical zoom lens!

Do you know the difference between optical and digital zoom? Think of optical like your eye. The lens has the power to see more, and capture more information. With digital zoom the technology is doing a lot of math after you tell it what part of the image you want to see bigger. With optical zoom these pictures would be clearer, easier to see, and appear in better focus. I hope that makes sense… maybe you can experiment to learn more.
