Sometimes it is fun to read a book at the same time a friend is reading the same book, then you can talk about it. Flat Hal was surprised by some of the things that happened in Swiss Family Robinson. The book was originally written in 1812, and people thought differently about things then than we do now.
After reading the book the flat fellas found out they had not read the original text, but an abridged version. Abridged means someone else made it shorter, and in this case tried to make it easier to read. They may have also taken out some of the descriptions that add to how easy and quickly a book reads. Flat Hal wondered if some of the fun was accidentally taken out of the writing.
Write a short story about surviving on an island with your best friends… who would come up with ideas to make a shelter? Who would figure out where to find what you need? WHO would know what food you can eat — or get hungry first?
